Bore Tide Safety: Tidal Mudflat & Silt Warnings

Turnagain Arm's mudflats are highly dangerous. Learn about tidal silt hazards, fast-rising tides, and why you should never walk on the coastal flats.

The Danger of Glacial Silt Mudflats

The mudflats of Turnagain Arm are composed of fine glacial silt. When saturated with water, this silt behaves like quicksand, trapping feet and legs instantly. Attempting to pull yourself out only increases suction, making self-rescue impossible.

Rapidly Rising Tides & Bore Wave Speed

The bore tide wave travels at speeds between 10 to 15 miles per hour, followed immediately by a rapid water rise. If you get stuck in the mud, you cannot outrun the rising tide, which climbs rapidly in a matter of minutes.

Seward Highway Safety Etiquette

Never walk out onto the mudflats under any circumstances. Respect posted warning signs. If you see someone stuck in the silt, do not walk out to help themโ€”call 911 immediately so trained search-and-rescue teams can respond.
