Gold Discovery & early Claims
Gold was discovered along Crow Creek in 1896. Early prospectors quickly staked claims, and by the early 1900s, the Crow Creek Hydraulic Coal and Mining Company had built dams, flumes, and massive water cannons (giants) to wash gold-bearing gravel from the canyon walls.
World War II & Abandonment
The mine was a major producer of gold in Southcentral Alaska until World War II, when the federal government ordered all non-essential gold mines to close. The heavy machinery sat silent, and the cabins fell into disrepair.
Preservation & Modern Tourism
In the late 20th century, the property was purchased and preserved as a historic site. Today, visitors can tour the original log cabins, view historic steam engines, and pan for gold using the same historic creeks.
