BACKCOUNTRY SURVIVAL

Crow Pass Essential Safety Protocols

Navigating remote alpine passes requires self-sufficiency, route-finding skills, and river-crossing techniques.

Glacial River Crossing Safety

The Eagle River crossing at Mile 12 is completely unbridged. Water levels fluctuate wildly with rainfall and glacial melt. Unbuckle your backpack hip belt, keep footwear on, use trekking poles for a tripod stance, and NEVER cross alone if water is above mid-thigh.

Grizzly & Black Bear Territory

The Crow Pass and Eagle River valleys host high densities of brown and black bears feeding on alpine vegetation, berries, and salmon. Carry EPA-approved bear spray in a chest harness and store all food in certified bear-resistant canisters.

Alpine Weather Volatility

Snow often persists at Crow Pass into mid-July. Sleet, freezing rain, and dense mountain fog can strike in August. Always carry waterproof Gore-Tex layers, thermal base layers, and an emergency bivy or tent.
