Girdwood Backcountry Safety: Avalanche & Wilderness Info

Girdwood's surrounding peaks offer incredible backcountry terrain, but they are also active avalanche zones. Stay safe by checking local forecasts, bringing the right gear, and understanding rescue logistics.

Chugach Avalanche Information Center (CNFAIC)

The Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center (CNFAIC) publishes daily avalanche forecasts for the Turnagain Pass and Girdwood valleys during the winter. Check their reports before any backcountry tour.

Essential Safety Gear

Every backcountry traveler should carry an avalanche beacon, shovel, and probe, and know how to use them. Carry a first-aid kit, extra warm layers, and a satellite communicator (e.g., Garmin inReach) as cell service is limited.

Zoning & Out-of-Bounds Policies

Respect ski resort boundaries and local land-use designations. Backcountry travelers should always travel in groups, register their trip plans with friends, and monitor changing weather conditions.
