Girdwood Emergency Preparedness: Closures & Hazards

Living in a mountain valley requires basic emergency preparedness. Learn how Girdwood handles highway cutoffs, winter storms, and local hazards.

Seward Highway Closures & Cutoffs

Traffic accidents or winter snow slides frequently close the Seward Highway near Mile 100, temporarily cutting off Girdwood from Anchorage. Residents should maintain a 3-day supply of food, medication, and fuel in case of highway blockages.

Winter Power Outages

Heavy snow loads and high winds can occasionally cause localized power outages in the forest. Homes should be equipped with emergency flashlights, blankets, and backup wood or propane heat sources.

GVFD Emergency Dispatch Center

During major valley-wide emergencies (wildfires or seismic events), the Girdwood Volunteer Fire Station serves as the local Emergency Operations Center. Sign up for Municipal emergency text alerts to stay informed.
