Girdwood Housing & Economic Committee (GHEC)

The Girdwood Housing & Economic Committee (GHEC) focuses on addressing Girdwood's housing shortage, managing short-term rental impacts, and ensuring long-term economic stability for residents.

Workforce Housing Goals

Girdwood suffers from a severe shortage of affordable housing for local resort and business employees. GHEC coordinate efforts with the Municipality of Anchorage, local non-profits (like the Girdwood Community Land Trust), and private developers to build dedicated long-term residential housing.

Short-Term Rental (STR) Proliferation

GHEC studies the economic impact of short-term rentals (such as Airbnb and VRBO) in the valley. Current efforts focus on establishing licensing, local tax compliance, and caps to prevent the loss of primary long-term rentals.

Local Economic Resiliency

GHEC advocates for diversified job creation, sustainable tourism strategies, and infrastructure improvements that ensure local families can afford to live and work in the valley year-round.
