Rain Gear & Waterproof Outerwear
A high-quality, breathable rain jacket is the single most important item. Pair it with lightweight, quick-dry trail pants. Avoid jeans or heavy cotton, which absorb water and take a long time to dry.
Hiking Footwear & Trail Mud
Summer trails in the valley, including Winner Creek, can be muddy and wet. Sturdy waterproof hiking boots or trail runners with aggressive tread are essential to prevent slipping on wet roots and mud.
Bug Protection & Sun Protection
Pack insect repellent with DEET or Picaridin, particularly for wooded trails and lake loops. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses for glacier viewpoints, and a lightweight daypack containing water, maps, and bear spray.
