Girdwood Winter Packing List: Ski Gear & Arctic Layers

Winter in Girdwood requires proper gear to handle sub-freezing temperatures, heavy snowstorms, and flat light on the ski slopes. Use our packing list to stay warm.

The Essential Layering System

Follow the three-layer rule: (1) a moisture-wicking base layer (merino wool or synthetic, no cotton), (2) an insulating mid-layer (fleece, wool sweater, or lightweight down jacket), and (3) a windproof, waterproof shell jacket (such as Gore-Tex) to keep out snow and wet coastal air.

Footwear & Ice Safety

Insulated, waterproof boots are mandatory for walking around town. Because Girdwood's streets and parking lots frequently freeze, carrying a pair of pull-on ice traction cleats (like Microspikes or Yaktrax) is highly recommended for safety.

Ski & Snowboard Gear Accessories

In addition to skis or snowboards, pack high-quality ski goggles with low-light lenses (essential for Girdwood's flat afternoon winter light), heavy insulated mittens, neck gaiters, hand warmers, and a helmet.
