Glacier Valley Transit Rider FAQs

Everything you need to know about navigating Girdwood without a personal vehicle.

Is Glacier Valley Transit really 100% free to ride?

Yes! Glacier Valley Transit (GVT) operates fare-free for all passengers. Funding is supported by the Girdwood Valley Service Area (GVSA) through the Board of Supervisors (GBOS), Municipality of Anchorage appropriations, local business sponsorships, and voluntary rider donations.

Can I bring skis, snowboards, or mountain bikes on the bus?

Yes. GVT buses are equipped with exterior ski and snowboard racks during the winter ski season, and front bike racks during summer and autumn. Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Are GVT buses ADA wheelchair accessible?

Yes. All primary GVT fleet buses feature low-floor pneumatic ramps or hydraulic wheelchair lifts. Drivers are trained to assist passengers with boarding and securement.

Are dogs allowed on Glacier Valley Transit?

Well-behaved, leashed dogs are generally welcomed at the driver's discretion, provided they are clean, calm, and do not block the aisle or occupy passenger seats. Service animals are always permitted.

How frequently does the bus loop through Girdwood?

During the core winter ski season and peak summer months, buses run approximately every 30 to 40 minutes along the main valley corridor between Hotel Alyeska and the Old Townsite from early morning until late evening.
