Girdwood Bear Safety Guide: Hiking in Active Bear Country

The Girdwood Valley and surrounding Chugach National Forest are home to both black and brown (grizzly) bears. Learn how to prevent encounters and hike safely.

Avoid Encounters: Make Noise

Bears prefer to avoid human contact. When hiking, make plenty of noise by talking loudly, clapping, or calling out 'Hey bear!' to avoid surprising a bear, especially near rushing creeks or dense brush.

Carrying & Using Bear Spray

Always carry EPA-approved bear spray on a chest or hip holster—never pack it inside your backpack. Know how to release the safety guard and fire the spray in a downwards cloud to stop a charging bear.

Campground Food Storage Rules

Bears have an incredible sense of smell. All food, garbage, and scented personal items must be stored inside certified bear-proof containers or locked inside hard-sided vehicles. Local ordinances fine residents for attracting bears.
